Hawkes Bay Medical Research Foundation is pleased to announce the funding of a medical research freezer to the cardiology section of Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

The freezer will be used to hold blood samples for a vast number of clinical trials that are taking place in Hawke’s Bay relating to research on Stroke, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Parkinson’s disease, Hypertension and Heart Failure; with up to 200 patents participating at any given time.

Diana Schmid the research coordinator for Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (HBDHB) says the $18,644 freezer has streamlined the procedures of collating and shipping the samples to Auckland and all over the world. “It is a great new asset as the freezer can maintain constant temperatures at 80c below which is the international standard guideline for storing blood samples. The old freezer we previously used could only reach 25 below.”

Dr Richard Luke, senior cardiologist says,” the freezer will help Diana immensely with all the research she provides the cardiology section.”

The Medical Research Foundation has donated over $2 million dollars worth of grants over the last 45 years to medical research for the benefit of Hawkes bay people.

The funding for the freezer came from the Brightwell Trust which the Foundation distributes grants for, on behalf of the trustee, Guardian Trust.
